Carmela O’Flaherty blends her own multicultural background with a multitude of professional and educational experiences to help her clients reach their communication goals. With 20 years of experience as a facilitator, a coach, and a trainer with global companies, she is dedicated to a dynamic and interactive approach to promote confidence, effective communication, and strategic impact in organizations.
Carmela joined Varallo International in 1997 as a senior-level consultant and coach. She has since designed and delivered programs, such as Clear and Effective Speaking, Developing a Global Mindset, Effective Business Writing, Team Building, Repatriation, and Presenting withImpact.Carmela works with international C-level executives, VPs, and managers at Prudential, EY, Horizon Blue Cross, Bank of America, BMW, and Forest Research. For KMPG she is one of the key facilitators for the U.S. Mobility program.
In addition to corporate one-on-one and group coaching, Carmela’s key area of expertise is her work with international relocating families and their successful integration into the U.S. culture. She has developed long-lasting relationships and created ongoing support systems in the U.S. and overseas.
As a result of Carmela’s coaching, her clients—including scientists, medical statisticians, actuaries, and IT personnel—have not only improved their skills and received accolades for their presentations, but also have earned numerous promotions.
Carmela gained her business experience at Salomon Smith Barney International Operations, collaborating with the trading desk, Foreign Exchange Department in New York, and overseas agent banks and clients. And as a Trainer/Senior Investment Assistant for Bankers Trust, she managed a group of investment trainees while providing support and service to the investment managers and multinational-client community.
In the academic world, Carmela has been a faculty member, working with International undergraduate and graduate students at Parsons School of Design, The New School, NY; Bergen CommunityCollege, NJ; and Columbia University, NY. She develops curriculum and teaches courses, such as Cultural Language, Cross-Cultural Communication, and a Learning Community Joint Business/American Language Program. Using relevant and socially responsible content, Carmela facilitates her students’ inquiry, analysis, and reflection for long-lasting learning and most importantly, connection and application to the world beyond academics.
Carmela is a member of the New Jersey Chapter of the Association for Talent Development (NNJ-ATD) and TESOL. She holds a BS in Business Administration and International Marketing, an MA in Education, and an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
