Carmela O’Flaherty blends her own multicultural background with a multitude of professional and educational experiences to help her clients reach their communication goals. With sixteen years of experience as a facilitator, a coach, and a trainer with global companies, she is dedicated to dynamic and interactive approach as a means of promoting personal and professional confidence in effective communication.
Carmela joined Varallo International in 1997 as a senior-level consultant and trainer. She has since developed and implemented numerous programs focusing on cross-cultural communication, improved oral and written business language skills, and public speaking for both U.S. Americans and international employees.
In 2013, Carmela continues to deliver communication skills programs to C-level executives, VPs, and management to Varallo International’s elite client base such as Prudential, Bank of America, and KPMG.
For Citigroup, Carmela trained international managers and executives in clear speech, presentation skills, writing, and U.S. business culture. For Datascope/Maquet, she facilitated Presenting with Impact, and for BMW she led a sales training workshop for the After Market sector. Carmela has also been one of the key trainers at KPMG multicultural workshops since 2008.
Prudential executives, Roche and Forest Laboratories scientists, medical statisticians, and IT personnel have earned numerous promotions as a result of Carmela’s coaching.
In addition to corporate one-on-one and group coaching, Carmela’s key area of expertise is her work with international relocating families and their successful integration into the U.S. culture. Throughout her years of working with the families, she has developed long lasting relationships and created ongoing support systems in the U.S. and overseas.
On the business side, Carmela worked for Salomon Brothers collaborating with the trading desk, Foreign Exchange Department in New York, and overseas agent banks and clients. As a Trainer/Senior Investment Assistant for Bankers Trust, Carmela managed a group of investment trainees while providing support and service to the investment managers and multinational client community.
Carmela has been a faculty member at Bergen Community College since 2002 where she has been teaching speech communication, pronunciation, writing, presentation skills, and intercultural communication. She has also served as an instructor at William Paterson and Kean Universities.
Carmela is a member of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Training and Development (NNJ-ASTD) and TESOL. She holds a BS in Business Administration and International Marketing; MA in Education, and an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
